So to usher in the newness of the new year, a good, simple smoothie bowl is the perfect way to add a little freshness to these long, cold winter days. These berry delicious smoothie bowls have us hooked, and I know you’re going to love them, too! Not to mention the homemade honey almond granola on top… so dang good!
So let’s get to some of the details..
How to Make the Perfect Berry Delicious Superfood Smoothie Bowl:
These smoothie bowls are addictive and surprisingly filling! Even my seven year old loves them, which is a double win when they’re kid tested and approved! Plus, as the name suggests, they’re packed full of antioxidants to give your immune system the push it needs to keep you feeling great all winter long.
A few more reasons why we love these superfood smoothie bowls:
Berries: High in antioxidants and fiber, berries help lower inflammation and lower cholesterol levels.
Honey: We eat honey in our house everyday! Another source of antioxidants, raw honey is also anti fungal, antibacterial and has powerful healing properties. Honey also works as a cough suppressant and research suggests that honey is as effective as dextromethorphan, a common ingredient found in over-the-counter cough medication! How cool is that?
Chia Seeds: Full of fiber, protein and antioxidants, these little seeds are powerhouses filled with nutrient dense properties. The ancient Mayans and Aztecs used chia seeds to help with stamina, energy and overall health. We love these little seeds and regularly add them to water for an easy energy boost, as well as homemade chocolate chia seed pudding for a healthy, superfood dessert!
So let’s make some superfood smoothie bowls!
Here is What you will need:
- your favorite frozen triple berry blend (I used blueberries, blackberries and raspberries)
- oat milk or almond milk
- banana
- greek yogurt
- honey
- vanilla extract
- chia seeds
- coconut flakes
- homemade almond honey granola, to top
- additional fresh fruit to top (optional)
In a blender add the frozen berries, 1 banana, oat milk, Greek yogurt, honey and vanilla. Blend on high for 2 minutes, until fully blended and smooth.
*if you want to make the smoothie even thicker, try freezing the sliced banana first! When frozen banana is blended, it has an ice cream like consistency!*
Divide the smoothie between two bowls and top with desired toppings! We top ours with whatever fresh fruit we have on hand, a sliced banana, coconut flakes, chia seeds, and obviously that delicious homemade honey almond granola; but feel free to make it your own and experiment!
Additional topping ideas:
- peanut or almond butter– for an extra protein boost!
- bee pollen– bee pollen is full of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and studies show can helps decrease inflammation, boost immunity and may even help with those stubborn allergies!
- hemp seeds– full of omega-3’s and omega 6 fatty acids, these seeds help with a wide range of health benefits including stabilizing blood sugar levels.
- cacao nibs– because everything could use a little chocolate, right? Adding a subtle crunch, cocoa nibs are delicious and full of antioxidants!
- dried mango slices
- any of your your favorite nuts or dried fruit!
- edible flowers– for a fun and beautiful surprise! Our favorite edible flowers are dried lavender, chamomile, rose’s and hibiscus.
Homemade Honey Almond Granola:
Arguably the best part of these smoothie bowls, this homemade granola is packed full of flavor and can be kept in an airtight container for up to two months. It also makes a homey housewarming gift! Bonus? It’s so easy to make and tastes far better than any store-bought granola I’ve ever had! (it’s also equally delicious as a cereal!)
Here is what you will need:
- old fashioned rolled oats
- sea salt
- melted coconut oil
- honey
- pure maple syrup
- vanilla extract
- slivered almonds
In a large bowl you will mix together the oats and sea salt. Add the melted coconut oil, pure maple syrup, honey and vanilla. Stir in slivered almonds.
Next, divide the granola between the two parchment paper lined pans and spread the granola out evenly. Bake for 12 minutes. After 12 minutes, carefully stir the granola and flatten the oats back out so that it is even. Bake for an additional 8-10 minutes, or until toasted (keep a close eye on it so it doesn’t burn!). After baking, allow to cool for 15-20 minutes. As the granola cools, it will harden and become more crunchy. Top the berry delicious superfood smoothie bowls with the homemade honey almond granola and any toppings you wish!
Then dig in!
So easy right?! These smoothie bowls are just perfect.
