Hello there! My name is Kaylen, the founder behind Butternut & Sage., and I’m so glad you’re here!
I am a wife and homeschool mother to two beautiful daughters and I am passionate about all things home, cooking delicious meals and living fully. I love to live simply and cook seasonally. Here I hope to inspire you to try something new or old- as long as its made with love.
For me, food is more than just fuel to get by. Its a chance to slow down, gather together around the table and share in the bounty of life with those we love most.
I discovered that I loved to cook shortly after marrying my husband, Matt. Since that discovery, I have been exploring new flavors and cuisines. Cooking has created a beautiful constant in our life- no matter what season we are in, we always have each other to come home to at the end of the day. Our table has served as a place to soothe our weary souls and gladden our hearts. And those daily moments are worth fighting for.
Cooking is a simple way I can pour myself out for those I love making sure they are nourished mind, body, spirit and soul. When my children are grown and have families of their own, I want them to look back on these cherished memories gathered around the table when we told stories and enjoyed being together.
No matter what life throws their way, there will always be a place at our table for them to come home to.
So here I hope to inspire you to slow down, pull up a chair and see the beauty of a life gathered together. To know those we love more deeply and to be known ourselves more fully is really what its all about.
Much love,
Kaylen

14 Things about me:
- My little family lives in Northern Nevada where the winters are long and cold and the summers are hot and dry. Autumn is my favorite season by far which is brief in Northern Nevada. We are surrounded by high desert, snowy mountains and endless forest just a short drive away. Camping, kayaking and being in the mountains are a favorite past time
- We love to travel and have been to seven countries! Ireland is probably our favorite.
- I have a strong faith in Jesus and wouldn’t be where I am without him in my life
- Someday we hope to have our own farm
- If you can’t find me in the kitchen Im usually in the garden, enjoying nature with my family, taking pictures, reading a book or drinking more coffee.
- Lord of the Rings is my favorite trilogy ever.
- I run on coffee… and dark chocolate.
- We moved to California’s Central Coast for about two years but missed Nevada’s wild terrain. Our favorite part about living in
- California was the ocean, Disneyland, growing a lemon tree and this cute little place called Avila Valley Barn. If you’re ever in the San Luis Obispo area, check them out here
- I have southern roots and spent many summers visiting family in Georgia. There is nothing quite like sitting on the porch with some sweet tea and watching the fireflies dance. (I also have a strong affection for modern bluegrass and folk music.. thanks granddaddy)
- I love a good bourbon. You will notice I add bourbon to many recipes.
- I am a huge homebody and love all things cozy
- We are homeschooling our kiddos and are learning all the joys that come with that endeavor
- I love creating atmosphere. I am huge on decorating, lighting and setting the mood. Atmosphere is so important!
- I love finding ways to live more simply, wholly and fully. Life is pretty darn beautiful.
